PHOENIX JAZZ WORKSHOP featuring Scott Zimmer (alto & soprano saxophones) Bryon Ruth (tenor saxophone) Ted Sistrunk (bass) Rachel Eckroth (piano) Rob Moore (drums) ? ? * * * * * This exceptional quintet has that magical musical rapport with each other that brings the audience in on the conversation. * * * * * ? ? ABOUT THE MUSICIANS: ? SCOTT ZIMMER holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Saxophone Performance from Arizona State University. He also holds a Masters degree in Saxophone Performance from the University of Oregon and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the University of Northern Iowa. As an educator, he currently teaches courses in jazz and rock history at Paradise Valley Community College. Dr. Zimmer has appeared on a number of recordings including Jazz with the Marohnic, Pilafian, Hopkins Jazz Nonet and Meltdown with The Pilafian Project. Currently, he performs locally with the Phoenix Jazz Workshop, the Azz Izz Band, the Desert Wind Saxophone Quartet, the Prizefighting Kangaroos Saxophone Quartet, and the jazz quartet Jiggle while teaching and performing as a freelance saxophonist and woodwind player. ? BRYON RUTH has been an active member of the Phoenix jazz scene for over twenty years. He holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Iowa and Master's degree in Saxophone Performance/Pedagogy from Arizona State University. Bryon has been a member of three locally awards winning jazz ensembles "Lookout for Hope," "Odd Man Out," and the "Phoenix Jazz Workshop." He is a first-call musician for touring shows and has performed with the Phoenix Symphony, Bobby Caldwell, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Rosemary Clooney, Tony Bennett, Rita Moreno, Rufus Reid, Tim Hagans and others. Currently, Bryon teaches at Phoenix College and Arizona State University Music department. He is a member of Grammy award winner Bob Freedman's jazz orchestra, and was a recipient of an Artist Project Grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts. ? TED SISTRUNK is one of the area’s most sought-after bassists. Originally from Manhattan, Kansas, Ted attended ASU to study with Chuck Marohnic.?He has also studied with bassists Rufus Reid, Dave Holland _blank_blankand Michael Formanack. Additionally, he has honed his composition, arranging and improvisational skills by studying with innovative trumpeter/composer/educator Ralph Alessi. _blankTed's talents and accomplishments combine to make him a valuable asset as bass instructor at Paradise Valley Community College.? Highly proficient in a vast collection of musical styles, Sistrunk always brings his ear for melodic lines and a solid, fat groove. His affinity for contemporary jazz delves into the outer reaches of his art form with his latest musical probe "Jiggle" which performs every Sunday at the Lost Leaf in downtown Phoenix. ? RACHEL ECKROTH: Pianist, singer, and composer Rachel Eckroth spent the last decade working and studying in Las Vegas and New York City. At Rutgers University she studied piano with the legendary Stanley Cowell, earning an MFA in 2005. In New York, Rachel was a part of the BMI jazz composers workshop, under the instruction of world reknown composers Jim McNeely and Mike Abene. Recently relocated to her native Phoenix, Arizona, she performs frequently with her own jazz trio and as a sideman. Rachel has performed with Peabo Bryson, the Temptations, the Stylistics, Deneice Williams, Percy Sledge, Marion Meadows, Khani Cole and many others. Rachel's first self-released CD, "MIND", has been going strong for 3 years, and the second, titled, "Louder Than Words" was recently released. ? ROB MOORE grew up in Phoenix and began his music education at age nine, first on clarinet and soon switching to drums. During high school Rob continued to develop his musicianship by playing drums in the high school jazz band, in the Phoenix Musicians Union sponsored all-city jazz band "Young Sounds" and in the Sedona Jazz on the Rocks youth band When he chose to attend Arizona State University Rob was awarded the Jazz-Bird scholarship and chosen--as a Freshman--to play in the University's top Concert Jazz Band. This accomplishent earned him the opportunity to work with legends such as Doc Severinson and Gunther Schuller. While at ASU Rob also performed in various jazz combos, Latin bands and percussion ensembles and studied with percussion Professor Dr. J.B. Smith and jazz drummer Dom Moio. Currently Rob lives in Scottsdale and works all around the Phoenix area with various musical ensembles, including Bob Ravenscroft’s Inner Journeys. ? ? * * * * * ? We request a $5.00 donation at the door (only a $3.00 donation from students.) Coffee, non-alcoholic beverages and desserts are for sale at our snack bar. ? Directions: Sacred Grounds is located at Scottsdale Congregational United Church of Christ, 4425 N. Granite Reef Rd., Scottsdale, AZ between Indian School and Camelback Roads. From the 101 take the Indian School Rd. exit and turn west and go to the second light (Granite Reef Rd.) and turn right (north). The church is on the right (east) side of the street, just south of Camelback Rd. ?
